Update on HushCon Seattle 2016 Electronic Badges
### A Message From Whitey

Hey All!

So there have been lots of questions from folks to our staff about when badges are going to be getting into people's hands; this is awesome! It's always rad when you create something that people actually want to get their hands on, especially with so many people asking about them (we've had requests from non-attendees at this point). The short, albeit vague, answer is soon. The goal is to have all of them in everyone's hands by the time HushCon New York rolls around. This isn't because HushCon New York has any particular meaning in terms of timing, but I'd like plenty of time for people to get use to them, develop for them, and do fun things with them. I’d like for HushCon Seattle 2017 to include a demo-scene and/or “coolest program” contest for the units (with prizes of course). Besides, how cool would it be to have a good ‘ole fashioned warez swap for attendee created carts?!

So what’s taking so long? Well… me! Following HushCon Seattle were the holidays, my chance to unwind from a long year and another successful con. In the start of the New Year I had a handful of “life events”, nothing too serious, but definitely situations where I felt it was more appropriate to take care of myself before other duties. Since I’m the primary person who assembles the electronic units the conference produces, so when I’m unavailable these things don’t get done.

I really appreciate all of the support people have provided, offering to help out, asking if there is anything they can do to expedite the process, or just act as a relay for updates on the progress. Everyone has really stepped up and treated these electronic giveaways as exactly that, something extra that they really want to get their hands on, not something they’re entitled to. All too often I hear complaints by other conferences or badge creators, that attendees lose sight that something like this is icing on the cake, not a given - I haven’t experienced that at all with these and it’s awesome!

Beginning this week all of the units will be put back into production; remember, that means me assembling and testing by hand. I will be producing small batches weekly, to ensure adequate testing and most importantly, care in assembly. As units are completed I will be going down our registration list and contacting attendees for mailing addresses to ship units out to.

I get a lot of praise for some of my work in electronics and badge design to date, but in all honesty (and this isn’t modesty) I’m still a n00b, just a few tutorials ahead of most in the Getting Started with Arduino book… and no, I don’t know how magnets work. This is another reason for the delay; I’m not in the habit, nor is it a facet of my job, to design, fabricate, and deliver functional electronics (even the code I write is all Proof-of-Concept and ugly as hell :P). This was an ambitious undertaking for me, but if you’re not going to do something awesome, what’s the point? I’m just glad so many people understand that awesome takes time and a lot of hard work ;)

I’ll be reaching out soon.

HushCon Seattle 2015 CTF - Sponsored by Sagitta HPC
This year we'll be holding another CTF at the conference, with prizes provided by our sponsor Sagitta HPC! This is a completely custom CTF centered around this year's conference theme, so it will not be something you've played before. Also, as Hushcon isn't really the type of conference where people will be playing the CTF full-time, the CTF was designed to be challenging but not difficult – something you can work on in the background while listening to talks. And as we said, there are prizes! We can't tell you what the prizes are (it's a secret), but we can say that they are awesome and we couldn't find a Cracker Jack box big enough to hold them. There will be prizes for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners presented at the close of the conference. Unfortunately for us, HushCon staff are prohibited from winning – we've not even been made aware of all aspects of the contest, so bribery won't do you any good, although we'll still accept bribes ;)

HushCon Seattle: Hardware Training 2015
Training registration is live! We're excited to offer our first ever HushCon Hardware Training, with classes by Joe FitzPatrick and Joe Grand. This year's training will be held on December 9th and 10th, at the Silver Cloud Hotel on Broadway in Capitol Hill. Classes begin at 8am and go until 5pm daily, with catering provided to registered attendees. We have limited seating available for these training classes, so be sure to register sooner rather than later to ensure your spot.

This year's offered training courses are:

Applied Physical Attacks On x86 Systems
by Joe FitzPatrick (@securelyfitz)

Hands-on Hardware Hacking and Reverse Engineering
by Joe Grand (@joegrand)

Registration is open to the public (unlike the regular con) and YES registering for one of the classes does gain you admission into the conference. More information, along with complete course outlines can be found at the registration page located HERE. Hope to see you there!
